Why it is its own leave type

Funeral rites in Nepal are observed over a defined period, and the thirteen days reflect that. Treating this as ordinary annual leave would make an employee spend their earned balance on an obligation they cannot decline, which is exactly why the Act separates it.

It draws on its own entitlement, not on home leave or sick leave.

Administering it well

  • Approve it without requiring the employee to negotiate. The circumstances are not a scheduling question.
  • Record it as mourning leave rather than as annual leave, so balances stay accurate.
  • Note that a company policy may extend or supplement it, but cannot reduce it.
