Twelve months, and why the lengths move
A Bikram Sambat month runs from one solar ingress to the next, so its length depends on where the sun actually is. That is why the same month is not the same length every year, and why no formula can produce these numbers.

Month lengths are fixed each year by the Panchanga committee and published. There is no leap rule to apply, which is why every converter is a lookup table rather than a calculation.
The parts that catch people out
The BS year is about 57 years ahead
Bikram Sambat runs roughly 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar, so the offset is not a constant number of years. Subtracting 57 gives the right answer for part of the year and the wrong one for the rest.
The Nepali year starts in April
Baishakh 1 falls on 13 or 14 April. BS 2000 began on 14 April 1943, which is the anchor this converter counts from.
A BS month can be 29, 30, 31 or 32 days
Gregorian months have fixed lengths and one leap rule. Bikram Sambat months do not, so a date that exists one year may not exist the next. The converter rejects a day the month does not have rather than silently rolling it forward.
Dates after BS 2083 are provisional
Month lengths become record only when the Panchanga for that year is published. Two independently maintained calendar tables agree exactly through BS 2083 and disagree after it, so later years are shown with a warning rather than presented as settled. Do not put a provisional date in a contract or on a filing deadline.
Payroll runs on the Nepali month
A Nepali salary period is a BS month, not a Gregorian one, which is why an attendance sheet or a payroll register laid out on the Gregorian month splits every period across two sheets.

Converting dates by hand is a symptom. Payroll periods, leave requests, attendance and offer letters all carry a Nepali date, and in the application they carry both without anyone converting anything.

Nepali date questions

Enter the Gregorian date in the AD to BS panel and the Bikram Sambat date appears with its weekday. As a rough check, add 56 years and 8 months, but do not rely on that: the offset shifts through the year because the two calendars start their years in different months.
BS 2000 to BS 2090, which is 14 April 1943 to April 2034. Month lengths through BS 2083 are published record. Later years are provisional and the tool marks them, because the published calendar tables disagree past that point.
Because a Bikram Sambat month is defined by the sun's movement between two zodiac signs rather than by a fixed count. The length varies from 29 to 32 days, and it varies year to year for the same month.
The month-length table was cross-checked line by line against two independently maintained calendar sources, which agree exactly for BS 2000 to 2083. BS 2083 also matches the Ministry of Home Affairs holiday gazette, and fifteen Nepali New Year dates were verified against public record. The checks run at build time, so a wrong month length fails the build rather than reaching this page.
