Employee Self-Service (ESS)
Employee self-service lets staff handle their own routine HR tasks: view a payslip, check a leave balance, apply for leave, update their details. It removes the queue of small requests that otherwise lands on HR.
Also called: ESS, self service portal, employee portal
The workload it removes
A large share of HR's inbound requests are questions an employee could answer themselves given access: how much leave do I have left, where is last month's payslip, has my leave been approved. Each one is small; together they consume most of an HR generalist's week in a growing company.
Self-service does not make the questions disappear. It moves the answer to where the question is asked.
What employees should be able to do without asking
- See and download their own payslips.
- Check leave balances by type, and apply.
- See where a request sits, and who it is waiting on.
- Update their own contact details, with the changes tracked.
- Check in and out, where attendance runs from a phone.
Mobile decides adoption
For staff who are not at a desk, and that is most people in a field, retail or manufacturing operation, a self-service portal that only works on a computer is not self-service. Adoption follows the phone experience, not the feature list.
