Gai Jatra is the Newar festival for families who lost someone in the past year. Processions of cows, and of children dressed as cows, go round the old towns, followed by satire and street theatre.
A holiday for one place: Kathmandu Valley branches
The notice grants Gai Jatra to the Newar community nationwide and to the Kathmandu Valley, not to everyone. A company with offices in and out of the valley has two honest options: a holiday for the valley branches only, or an optional day that staff who observe it can take.
In 2083 it falls on a Saturday. Where Saturday is the weekly rest day, nobody gains a day off and nobody is owed one.
Is Gai Jatra a paid holiday for a private company?
Not by law. The notice grants Gai Jatra to newar community nationwide, and the kathmandu valley rather than to every employee, and Section 41(2) of the Labour Act 2074 leaves a private employer to choose its own 13 days (14 for a female employee).
