Counting to Gyalpo Lhosar

Gyalpo Lhosar is the new year of the Sherpa and other Himalayan Buddhist communities, kept in Falgun. Families gather at Boudha and Swayambhu and at monasteries across the mountains.

One notice day, a two-week festival

The notice gives Gyalpo Lhosar one day, to everyone. In Sherpa families the celebration lasts longer, and staff from Solukhumbu and other mountain districts often travel home for it.

It also falls at the start of the spring trekking and climbing season, the busiest weeks for companies in tourism. That is exactly when staff who keep Lhosar want leave, so agree it early.

Is Gyalpo Lhosar a paid holiday for a private company?

Only if the company picks it. Section 41 of the Labour Act 2074 fixes 13 paid public leave days a year (14 for a female employee) and leaves the choice of days to the employer; government offices close under the notice.
