Maghe Sankranti, Magh 1, marks the sun's move into Capricorn and the turn towards longer days, celebrated with til laddu, ghee and sweet potato. For the Tharu community it is Maghi, the new year and the biggest festival of the year.
A national holiday that is also a new year
For most staff Maghe Sankranti is one festive day. For Tharu staff in the western Tarai, Maghi is the new year and runs over several days of family and community gatherings.
A company with branches from Dang to Kanchanpur should expect leave requests around it, and a Tharu employee may name Maghi as the festival they celebrate for festival expense.
Is Maghe Sankranti a paid holiday for a private company?
