Counting to Nepali New Year
Nepali New Year is Baishakh 1, the first day of the Bikram Sambat year. Bhaktapur marks it with Bisket Jatra, and the government's public holiday notice runs from this day to the last day of Chaitra.
Does the new year reset leave or payroll?
No. Nepal's fiscal year starts on Shrawan 1, about three months later, and salary tax and the year-end payroll checks run on that year. Leave balances follow the fiscal year too unless the company's bye-law sets a different leave year.
What Baishakh 1 does start is the holiday year. The 13 days a company picks under Section 41(2) of the Labour Act are picked from this notice, so the list is best fixed and shared with staff before the year begins rather than festival by festival.
Is Nepali New Year a paid holiday for a private company?
Only if the company picks it. Section 41 of the Labour Act 2074 fixes 13 paid public leave days a year (14 for a female employee) and leaves the choice of days to the employer; government offices close under the notice.
Nepal Rajpatra, Khanda 75, Sankhya 67, Bhag 5, clause 2.1(a).
