Counting to Indra Jatra

Indra Jatra is Kathmandu's festival of Indra, god of rain. The living goddess Kumari is pulled through the old city in her chariot, and the masked Lakhey dances in the streets.

The start of the leave season

Indra Jatra opens the busiest two months of the year for leave. Ghatasthapana, the Dashain block, Tihar and Chhath follow within about eight weeks, and most of the year's home leave requests arrive with them.

Plan it as a roster, not as first come, first served: set the minimum cover each team needs, open requests for the whole Dashain to Chhath window at once, and decide them together. The notice grants Indra Jatra itself to the Kathmandu Valley only.

Is Indra Jatra a paid holiday for a private company?

Not by law. The notice grants Indra Jatra to kathmandu valley only rather than to every employee, and Section 41(2) of the Labour Act 2074 leaves a private employer to choose its own 13 days (14 for a female employee).
