Counting to Tamu Lhosar
Tamu Lhosar is the Gurung new year, kept on Poush 15. Gurung communities gather in traditional dress, and Kathmandu and Pokhara hold large public celebrations.
Three Lhosars in one notice
The notice grants three new years, each to everyone: Tamu Lhosar for the Gurung community in Poush, Sonam Lhosar for the Tamang community in Magh, and Gyalpo Lhosar for the Sherpa and other Himalayan communities in Falgun.
Few companies give all three. A common approach is to give the one most of the workforce keeps and let staff from the other communities take theirs as an optional day, so the count stays fair across the year.
Is Tamu Lhosar a paid holiday for a private company?
Only if the company picks it. Section 41 of the Labour Act 2074 fixes 13 paid public leave days a year (14 for a female employee) and leaves the choice of days to the employer; government offices close under the notice.
Nepal Rajpatra, Khanda 75, Sankhya 67, Bhag 5, clause 2.1(k).
